This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
This month Deseret Book Company will be celebrating 145 years of publishing and selling information to lift and spread light to communities around the world. How many businesses in America that have been around so long can say they're within a one-block radius of where they started? In addition, Deseret Book is one of the oldest publishing companies in the United States.
This beautiful brick and mortar is a major landmark in "Downtown Rising," right across from Temple Square. As you venture into the flagship store on South Temple, you'll find everything from books published with doctrinal teachings of the LDS Church to other publications promoting family values. They also have rolls from The Lion House and other wonderful sweets. Wait until you set eyes on the cinnamon rolls!
Deseret Book is committed to the in-store experience and supports 37 stores in the Western Region. If you're more Internet-oriented, they can help you there too. Their commitment to providing faith-based messages extends to e-books, audio, Kindle, and soon they'll be releasing a free app, Deseret Bookshelf.
Children's literacy is a critical focus for Deseret Book and has been for decades. Since starting their programs, Chapters of Hope, Month of a Thousand Books and now Read Today, they've donated tens of thousands of books to schools throughout Utah.
One of their campaigns takes well-known authors to schools across the United States. This amazing company sets up national tours with authors like Obert Skye of the Levan Thumps series or Brandon Mull, author of bestselling Fablehaven series. Did you know that if kids are not reading at grade level by the time they reach third grade they are highly likely to be left behind for the rest of their academic career? It's compelling information like this that motivates Deseret Book to find ways to encourage kids to read.
Music is another important focus for Deseret Book, and they've been marketing and distributing the Mormon Tabernacle Choir's products for years. In fact, the latest release is Men of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
