SANTA CLARA, Washington County — Searchers Monday found the body of a hiker who fell to his death while hiking in Snow Canyon Sunday evening.

Searchers locate body of fallen hiker in Snow Canyon

The man — who officials say is in his early 20s — was hiking with two others on the Island in the Sky trail in Snow Canyon State Park when he lost his footing and fell about 100 feet from a cliff ledge, Washington County sheriff's detective Nate Abbott said.

The man's companions were able to call for help Sunday night, but darkness and the rugged terrain prevented crews from mounting a rescue. Abbott said rescuers were back at the canyon around 7 a.m. Monday and a helicopter was used to search the area.

Searchers found the body just after 9 a.m. The man's name has not yet been released.

Snow Canyon State Park is located approximately eight miles northwest of St. George.
