RICHFIELD — A Utah Department of Transportation snow plow was pushed off the road Wednesday morning due to an avalanche in Sevier County. Adverse driving conditions prompted officials to close State Route 72 until further notice.

The plow had been attempting to clear snow on the roadway north of Fremont, near the summit that divides eastern Sevier and northern Wayne counties.

UDOT Public Involvement Manager Kevin Kitchen said no injuries were reported, but plows from adjacent maintenance stations adjusted their routes to accommodate the recovery and keep snow removal operations on key corridors going.

Kitchen reported high winds and blowing snow were creating poor visibility at higher elevations throughout the region and significant snowdrifts had already accumulated on mountain passes as of 10 a.m., with much more snow activity expected as the day progresses.

S.R. 72 connects northwestern Wayne County to I-70 and southwestern Emery County. For the latest road closures and major incidents travelers should dial 5-1-1 or visit www.commuterlink.utah.gov.
