Azusa Pacific end Westminster's undefeated start

AZUSA, CALIF. -- The sixth-ranked Westminster men's basketball team had its season opening 11-game winning streak snapped with an 81-66 loss at No. 10 Azusa Pacific on Monday night. Westminster suffers defeat for the first time this season after setting a school record with 11 straight wins to start the season. Azusa Pacific improves to 10-2 with the victory.

Westminster (11-1) trailed by just five with 4:04 remaining before shooting 2-of-9 the remainder of the game. The Griffins shot just 44.3% from the field and were only 5-of-21 (23.8%) from beyond the arc. APU outrebounded Westminster 39-25 and turned 11 offensive rebounds into 16 second chance points. Westminster shot just eight free throws in the game while APU went to the stripe 20 times and made 18.

Jake Orchard paced the Griffins with 24 points and 10-of-17 shooting. AJ Reilly scored 14 points but, he was just 1-of-6 from long range. Michael Stockton finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and five assists. The Griffin reserves combined for just eight points.

Danny Nugent led Azusa Pacific with 24 points and nine rebounds. Reggie Owens added 22 points and nine boards. The Cougars shot 51.8% from the floor and scored 18 points from 17 Westminster turnovers.

Westminster will return to action on Wednesday, December 29 when they face Indiana Wesleyan at the Grand Canyon Classic in Phoenix, Arizona.
