This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
I just had one of the best sub sandwiches I've had in a long time, and I need to thank Jay Taylor and his brother, Michael, for bringing the Salt Lake Valley's first "Port of Subs" to Draper at 177 W. 12300 South.
This restaurant started in Reno, Nev. in 1973 and finally it's landed here. That's exactly how a group of Utahns felt when they saw the Port of Subs being built. These are people who had the opportunity to try one of these great sandwiches outside of Utah and couldn't believe their eyes when they drove by and saw the sign. Many would stop in hopes the sub shop was open.
Because of this pent up expectation, Jay and Michael had the largest grand opening in the history of the business with their 12 employees. What a great decision for these two businessmen to choose Utah for their new venture! We were recently voted No. 1 for our business climate, and we're first for our economic outlook.
They've only been open for a month, and it's not uncommon to see a line of people ready to order one of 18 subs available. They have cold and hot subs. The pastrami is incredible, and the prices can't be beat. They will make box lunches and have already filled a catering order for nine trays of subs.
Michael and Jay are natural businessmen and already have their sights set on a second franchise next spring. These guys do their homework and research the next best business move. Jay grew up in Reno where this sub franchise started so when his daughter said, "Dad, you need to bring in a Port of Subs to Utah," he did it. I thought it was funny when he told me, "I'm in this business because I want to eat the subs!"
Just so you know these guys went through an arduous process with the franchise president to open the business. He gets only the best businesspeople who show determination and follow the guidelines to produce a stellar product.
For Zions Bank, I'm Chris Redgrave, speaking on business.
