This is Chris Redgrave for Zions Bank Speaking on Business.
As an average consumer, a manufacturer has about five seconds to draw your attention to their product. If you pick it up and turn it over, the likelihood you'll buy it has now increased to 80 percent.
And Premier Plastics in West Valley City is helping with this process. This 21-year-old company started with one plastics molding machine and has grown to 12 full-time employees. After a year of strategic planning, company president Jim Holbrook is looking to double his company within the next few months. This includes hiring more employees and taking the operation from 10,000 square feet to almost 25,000.
With his talented design team, his goal is to assist manufacturers in moving their products. I asked him how he markets Premier Plastics, and he said it's mainly been word of mouth. He has become a trusted voice in the plastics industry.
This innovative company works with some of the most recognizable brands in the world. It's the thermofoam company preferred by manufacturers because it has lower packing costs, flexibility and capacity and guaranteed performance.
Although he's still required to work many hours, Jim loves being in business for himself. He said, "I would make a terrible employee for someone."
In meeting with Jim, he had plastic molding products all over his operation, and I was blown away when he explained what a competitive business plastics creation is. The trend today is to go with less plastic on the container so the packaging is less harmful to the environment. He is all about recycled plastics, but Jim understands the pricing model needs to be reasonable for the average consumer to consider using it.
You can tell Jim is proud of where he's come from and enjoys being in a business that comes across as recession proof. When I asked how he sets himself apart, he said it's his way of looking at plastic molding from the inside out and then designing the perfect packaging.
