SALT LAKE CITY -- Hundreds of people pledged to "raise their hand for education" Tuesday at the United Way's Education Excellence Summit in Salt Lake City.

The goal of the conference is to strengthen education and outcomes in Utah schools.

"We have to rethink the way America and Utah approaches education," said Tom Love, chairman of the board of directors of the United Way of Salt Lake. "We are helping create the discussion and create ideas to make changes."

One focus is early education, extending optional all-day kindergarten and providing preschool programs. They issued a call to action for every Utahn to join the effort to make education a top priority.

One simple way to accomplish that goal is to read at home to your children.
