SALT LAKE CITY -- The annual Salvation Army kettle kickoff started with a bang or maybe a ring in Salt Lake Friday.

This year's campaign theme, "Hope Wanted," draws attention to the continuing hardships men, women and children face in the wake of our country's ongoing economic struggle.

Many families are drained of waning unemployment benefits, high costs of living and lack of jobs. They are not just looking for help, they are looking for hope.

Salvation Army officers say they look to the community for its generosity to help the poor, homeless and those in need, especially during the holiday season.

"The economy is again made it a rough year for many families, and we've seen it firsthand in the numbers of people coming to us for help," said Major Richard Greene, The Salvation Army Wasatch Front coordinator. "It's especially hard during the holiday season when so many of our neighbors don't know how they'll have the means to provide for their families. That is why The Salvation Army looks to our community for their generosity: so we can show the same compassion and kindness to the less fortunate."

Greene says that every little bit helps and the change that you drop in a Salvation Army kettle makes a change in people's lives.
