SYRACUSE, Utah (AP) -- The sixth annual auction of some 200 bison from Antelope Island State Park appears to have netted Utah about $300,000.
The Saturday auction at the island ranch brought in dozens of buyers, the Deseret News reported.
But Park Manager Ron Taylor says large ranching operations dominated the bidding and drove up prices. He says four or five individuals walked away with the majority of the animals.
The 2010 live auction also had a new format. Bidding took place tent, with the animals seen on video, rather than at the bison corral. Taylor says the idea was to reduce stress on the animals.
The herd dates back to the 1893 introduction of four bulls, four cows and four calves to the Great Salt Lake island. The herd approaches about 600 head annually before the auction is held.
