SALT LAKE CITY -- Representatives of several Orthodox Christian faiths are meeting in Salt Lake City this weekend to discuss worshiping together. A special service was held Friday afternoon at Saints Peter and Paul Orthodox Church.
The group is called the Orthodox Christian Laity, and the members represent a number of faiths. The Greek, Serbian, Russian, Armenian and other Orthodox churches currently meet separately in their own houses of worship, have their own headquarters, and hold services in their various languages.
The purpose of coming together, as represented in Friday's event, is to strengthen younger generations in their faith and allow them to worship in services performed in English.
"[We'll be] worshiping in English, but one of the great riches of orthodoxy is the tremendous diversity that we have," says Metropolitan Jonah, Arch Bishop of Washington.
Following the special service Friday night, there will be a dinner and a program with a couple of distinguished scholars who will speak on the subject of protecting the Orthodox faith and moving it into the future.
The meetings will continue Saturday at Prophet Elias Greek Orthodox Church near 5300 South and Highland Drive Holladay.
