SALT LAKE CITY -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has issued a statement about changes made to the recent conference address of President Boyd K. Packer for its printed version.
In his talk on protecting the family and morality President Packer addressed same-sex attractions, calling them, what some believe are inborn tendencies toward the impure. [CLICK HERE to watch Pres. Packer's Conference talk]
In the official, printed version of the speech the word "tendencies" was changed to "temptations" and the phrase "Why would our Heavenly Father do that to anyone?" was taken out of the talk in text published on the Church's website.
A Church spokesman points out that it is common for conference speakers to review their speeches and make edits.
"The Monday following every General Conference, each speaker has the opportunity to make any edits necessary to clarify differences between what was written and what was delivered or to clarify the speaker's intent. President Packer's speech generated a protest Thursday night at Temple Square. Leaders of the gay community say they are interested in the revisions made to the speech, and continue to work toward an open dialogue with LDS leaders.
And the Church reiterated that its position on marriage and family is clear and consistent, and based on respect had love.
