GRANTSVILLE -- Wildlife officials have revoked the hunting permit for Grantsville's chief of police in connection with an alleged poaching incident.
Grantsville Police Chief Danny Johnson was recently hunting with his son on a dirt road that traverses private property near Soldier Summit in Central Utah. The son of a landowner took a cell phone picture of Johnson.
The landowner confronted Johnson and his son after they allegedly fired at a deer on private property, shooting from the road.
Saturday, Johnson told KSL News his son did the shooting, with his encouragement, and they didn't notice "private property" signs. He said he turned himself in to wildlife officials after realizing the deer was on private property.
"I've been a cop for 30 years, and I'm trying to do the right thing. I made a mistake and I corrected the mistake as soon as possible," Johnson said.
Wildlife officers did not return KSL's calls, but Johnson said he surrendered the deer and his hunting permit. He told us the case remains under investigation.
