Randall Jeppesen, KSL NewsradioMany of the nation's top insurance companies are inspecting homes in the west and threatening to drop coverage if people don't take precautions against forest fires.
Hal Visick has lived on the top of Provo's east bench for 35 years. Every time a fire has burned above his home, he says Mother Nature has helped out. He says, "It seems like the wind starts blowing up the hill."
But insurance companies are now inspecting hillside homes in Utah and other western states to evaluate the fire danger. If there's too much brush nearby, some companies will ask the homeowner to get rid of it. If the homeowner doesn't get rid of the brush, they could see in increase in their insurance rate or lose coverage altogether.
Some watchdog groups say insurance companies are going too far to insure their high profits.
