RIVERTON, Utah (AP) -- Utah's Riverton Hospital is dedicating a new children's unit that administrators say will let Primary Children's Medical Center treat south Salt Lake County children closer to home.

Hospital spokesman Jess Gomez calls the partnership a first within the Intermountain system.

He says the unit will be supported by services at Riverton Hospital, but doctors at Primary Children's will provide and manage patient care.

Community physicians will also be able to care for their patients at the center.

Plans call for the 30-bed unit to initially admit short-term patients not requiring complex care, but eventually expand to admit more complicated medical and surgical cases.

Patients will be referred to the Children's Unit through the Riverton Hospital Emergency Department and community pediatricians.
