SALT LAKE CITY -- The Deseret News today introduced its new Editorial Advisory Board, a collection of thought leaders from around the country that will provide insight to the Deseret News. This board will work closely with editor Joseph A. Cannon and opinion editor Paul Edwards.

The editorial advisory board brings together individuals who support values championed by the Deseret News, according to Clark Gilbert, president and CEO of the newspaper. He indicated that the heritage of the newspaper grows from the values and mission of the Deseret Media Companies, which include the Deseret News, KSL and other media entities. Those values include aligning the organization to honor principles espoused by its ownership, pursuing excellence through innovation and quality, championing virtues and improving the lives of its readers.

"At the Deseret News, we should be comfortable with and directed by these values," Gilbert said in an open letter published in the Deseret News. "They are values shared by our readership, our leadership team and our ownership. They also help us connect to good people from diverse cultural, religious and geographic backgrounds."

Gilbert introduced six areas of focus that will be emphasized in the insight provided by the editorial advisory board: the family, financial responsibility, excellence in education, care for the needy, values in the media and faith in the community.

The editorial advisory board includes scholars, politicians, community activists, educators and philanthropists from around the country. Each has expressed a commitment to extend the reach and impact of the Deseret News. The creation of this board showcases the Deseret News' effort to "provide a compelling experience to our readers on topics and issues they care about and value," according to Gilbert.

Members of the editorial board include:
