SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Small-claims court filings will move to city and county justice courts Sept. 1.
Utah State Courts spokeswoman Nancy Volmer says some counties already require claims to be filed in justice courts, but the change will solidify that throughout the state.
Some areas of Cache County that don't have a justice court will still file in district courts. The change is meant to save money. Small-claims cases involve disputes of less than $10,000, and the parties usually do not have an attorney during the proceedings.
Volmer says cases filed in district courts before Sept. 1 will still be heard in the district court, and small-claims appeals will be handled by district court judges.
