SALT LAKE CITY -- A judge denied an environmental group's 11th-hour appeal Monday to stop the progress toward a new soccer complex in Rose Park.
The Jordan River Restoration Network filed a request for a temporary restraining order to postpone a public hearing, set for Tuesday, on the new Regional Athletic Complex.
The group wanted the Salt Lake City officials to provide every document dealing with the complex dating back to 2002 before it holds the meeting.
Judge Glenn Iwasaki has ruled against that request, and the council will consider issues related to the complex during both their work session and formal public meeting Tuesday.
"I think the decision by Judge Iwasaki is really an unfortunate impact of our constitutional rights as the public," Salt said Monday. "We have a right to have records to participate in public hearings with information, otherwise what's the point of having public hearings?"
The city, however, says it has already given the group more than 9,000 pages of documents. Administrators also said the latest request is too large, too expensive and a stall tactic to create further delays.
"The important thing here to recognize is this is not about access to the documents," said city attorney Ed Ruton. "It's about who is going to bear the cost of the search."
While previous public hearings have been held on the topic, Salt's attorney, Karthik Nadesan, said Tuesday's council hearing would be one of the last chances for Salt Lake residents to weigh-in on the large-scale sports complex adjacent to the Jordan River near 2200 North.
