BRIGHAM CITY -- Brigham City is bracing for an influx of visitors next weekend during the groundbreaking for the LDS temple to be built there.
Jim Buchanan, director of emergency services for the city, tells the Standard-Examiner that within 12 hours of the official announcement of the groundbreaking, hotels were booked full in Brigham City.
City officials are expecting anywhere from 10,000 to 30,000 visitors for the event that begins at 9 a.m. on July 31. It will include up to 2,000 invited guests. The public is invited to attend. The groundbreaking also will be broadcast by satellite to LDS stake centers throughout the temple district.
Other cities will send police officers to help with traffic and road closures. The Standard-Examiner reports Main Street and 13 intersections will be closed.
The temple will be built at 250 S. Main St., across from the historic Box Elder LDS Tabernacle. The four-floor, 36,000-square-foot building will be the 14th temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah.
