OGDEN, Utah (AP) -- Ogden's fire chief says the city should burn down vacant homes in the Ogden River Project area.

Chief Mike Mathieu says homes pose a significant fire hazard. He says his department has already responded to 17 structure fires in the area.

Mathieu said in a memo to the city council that burning the vacant homes could also be a good training for firefighters.

He says the fire department hopes to assess each of the houses to determine which can be safely burned starting this summer.
