SALT LAKE CITY -- The Salt Lake City Police Department has arrested a man believed to be the driver of a vehicle that hit a 7-year-old boy near Liberty Park on June 21.

Just before 6 p.m. that afternoon, 7-year-old Calvin Barbanell and his mother Melissa were at the crosswalk at 1035 S. 500 East, crossing east into Liberty Park. The boy, who was riding a bicycle, was hit by a truck, which then left the scene of the accident.

Calvin was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He was wearing a helmet but still suffered head injuries and a three-inch laceration on his liver. He is expected to recover, but the process will not be easy.

Friday, 27-year-old Zachary Hutchings turned himself in to detectives. He was booked on one third-degree felony charge of hit-and-run, causing serious bodily injury, and one third-degree felony charge of obstruction of justice.

Detectives also recovered his black 1993 Ford F-150, which detectives believe was involved in the incident.

Just days after the accident, Calvin's parents made a public plea for the driver to come forward.
