DAVIS COUNTY - The Davis School District should decide by next Tuesday whether or not students will have two fewer days of school next year.

Davis board members heard a proposal Tuesday night to furlough everyone for two days. The president of the Davis Education Association, Susan Firmage, says the board is in the process of ratifying that contract with the teachers and classified unions.

"It's very difficult but very courageous for the school board to look at this," she says.

Firmage says teachers are already dealing with higher insurance costs and higher class sizes. She says no one wants to cut school, but this would save $3 million, and that means jobs.

"This was our last resort in order to balance the budget," she says.

The board has not said which days of the year would be cut, but it will make the final decision on the proposal June 1.

The district faces a $31 million budget shortfall this year.
