SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- About eleven-thousand people gathered last night for a Hispanic devotional in the Conference Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The Spanish-speaking devotional was in celebration of the 175th anniversary of the church and the 200th birthday of the church founder Joseph Smith.

Between hymns performed by a 365-member youth choir, church leaders spoke of the importance of the church's worldwide growth. A translator repeated their speeches in Spanish.

President of the First Quorum of the Seventy Merrill Bateman urged Hispanics to reach out to the immigrant population coming to Utah.

Quorum of the Twelve member M. Russell Ballard spoke of his grandfather who was instrumental in establishing the church's missionary operations in South America in the 1920s.
