SALT LAKE CITY -- The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hopes to begin construction on its first temple in the state of Pennsylvania later this year.
The Philadelphia City Council Wednesday approved a height variance necessary to build the planned structure. The approval will allow construction of the temple with double spires that reach just over 200 feet high.
Other city approvals are still needed, but a church spokesman says ground for the new temple likely will be broken by the end of 2010.
Construction should be completed by 2013.
The Philadelphia Pennsylvania Temple was announced by Church President Thomas S. Monson in October 2008.
