SALT LAKE CITY -- The North Temple viaduct is one step closer to coming down.

Demolition of the bridge ramped up Wednesday as crews work toward the construction of the new airport TRAX line. 400 West at North Temple is closed until 9 p.m. Thursday.

The viaduct crosses Union Pacific and UTA railroad tracks between 600 West and 300 West. The site will be a massive construction zone, complete with closed roads and detours for about 18 months.

When it's done, the new viaduct will carry more than cars: Bikes, pedestrians and light rail trains will make this a kind of "super bridge."

Replacing the bridge is a $71 million piece to the airport TRAX line. The total cost is $350 million, paid for through sales taxes.

Salt Lake City leaders say they expect the airport line to be up and running in the next two or two and a half years.
