SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Nevada man who pleaded guilty to theft by deception and forgery for posing as a Major League Baseball player to try to steal a vehicle has been sentenced to six months in jail.
Matthew T. Van Meter of Elko, Nev., was given credit for 117 days he's already served. Van Meter was sentenced Monday in Salt Lake City. The Salt Lake Tribune reported he'll also serve three years of probation and must complete 100 hours of community service.
The 25-year-old Van Meter was arrested in January after using Chicago Cubs outfielder Tyler Colvin's name to sign papers for a 2010 Dodge pickup worth $50,000 at a West Valley City dealership.
He promised to pay for the truck the next day and left another car at the dealership. Workers looked in the car and found documents with Van Meter's name on them.
