SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A Canadian woman was killed when her kayak capsized in heavy waves at Lake Powell.

The National Park Service says 41-year-old Michele Melik of Edmonton, Alberta, overturned 100 yards offshore.

The woman's body, still in a life jacket, was recovered by park rangers yesterday.

Melik was kayaking with a friend who also overturned in heavy winds and 4-foot swells on Tuesday.

The man wasn't able to rescue Melik because of the dangerous conditions but was able to swim safely to shore.

He spent the night camping with Melik's 15-year-old son before they were able to flag down some help.
