(Ankara, Turkey-AP) -- A Turkish news agency is reporting that Turkey will not send troops to Iraq.
Turkey's parliament approved the deployment of peacekeepers in Iraq last month. Members of the Iraqi Governing Council, however, expressed serious opposition to the troops.
American officials had pressed Turkey -- the only mostly-Muslim nation in NATO -- to approve sending the troops to help relieve U-S forces.
A Foreign Ministry spokesman says Turkey reconsidered sending troops after discussing the issue with Secretary of State Colin Powell.
