SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah officials are marking the opening of a new public health laboratory in Taylorsville.
The Unified State Lab opens Thursday. The 78,000-square-foot facility replaces the old lab, which was built in 1972 on the University of Utah campus.
The lab provides a variety of public health services, including identification of emerging diseases -- including the swine flu -- as well as screening newborn baby diseases and providing forensic toxicology tests. The lab can also test for chemical and biological agents and analyze air, soil and water.
Gov. Gary Herbert and health department director Dr. David Sundwall were expected to attend the opening ceremony.
