Today Brian David Mitchell was found incompetent to stand trial for kidnapping Elizabeth Smart. Here's a look at the status of other mental competency cases in Utah.

Brian David Mitchell's co-defendant Wanda Barzee has been found incompetent to stand trial. One doctor determined Barzee was a paranoid schizophrenic. Another said she suffered from shared psychotic disorder, which is characterized by a transfer of delusions from one person to another.

De Kieu "Lisa" Duy, accused of shooting and killing an AT&T employee during a shooting spree here at the Triad Center, was found incompetent to stand trial and committed to the state hospital. Duy's case has been ongoing since 1999, but she has been repeatedly found to be incompetent to stand trial by mental health officials.

Eugene Woodland, also known as Captain Nemo shot and killed Sandy contractor Bruce Larson in 1990. After mixed rulings on his mental state, in 1994 a judge declared Woodland competent again to stand trial. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to prison

After two years of treatment Ron Lafferty, who along with his brother Dan killed their sister-in-law Brenda and her infant child, was found competent to stand trial after two years of treatment at the Utah State Hospital.
