The Humane Society of Utah has asked police to investigate whether the suspect in the Elizabeth Smart case is also a suspect in a series of animal mutilations.

Animal advocates note a series of cat mutilations took place in the Avenues, in the same time period accused kidnapper Brian Mitchell was living in the canyons above the Avenues.

The nature of the mutilations, they say, indicated a ritualistic, cult-like motivation.
