SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- A GOP lawmaker wants to redistribute property tax revenue from affluent school districts to poorer ones.
Rep. Merlynn Newbold, R-South Jordan, says it's unfair for some school districts to be able to spend more on students than others.
She's introducing a bill that would redistribute $32 million in property taxes from districts with high property values to districts with lower property values based on a per-student funding formula that's already used to distribute income tax revenue to schools.
School districts in Salt Lake City and Park City would lose nearly $16 million combined under the plan, while charter schools and the Davis School District would gain nearly $14 million combined.
