SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Stealing gas could result in someone losing their driver's license for up to 90 days under a bill the Utah Legislature has approved.

Theft of gas can already lead to jail time, but Rep. Mike Noel, R-Kanab, says that jails are too full to accommodate those who don't commit major crimes.

He says Senate Bill 98, sponsored by Sen. Jon Greiner, R-Ogden, offers an alternative punishment that could serve as a deterrent.

The bill passed unanimously in the House on Wednesday. Gov. Jon Huntsman will now decide whether to sign the bill into law.
