Don Donoher, the winningest basketball coach at Dayton, dies at 92

Don Donoher, the winningest basketball coach at Dayton and a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, has died. He was 92. The university announced Donoher's death on Friday night. No cause of death was given. Donoher went 437-275 in a 25-year coaching career, all with the Flyers. He led Dayton to the NCAA Tournament nine times and to the NIT seven times. Under Donoher, the Flyers played for the NCAA championship in 1967, losing to UCLA.

Max Fried's start to the season has been frustrating. Evan Carter added three hits as the Rangers built a 12-3 lead by the sixth inning. Houston fell to 4-11. The Astros had not been that many games below .500 since they were 22-29 before a Memorial Day win in 2016, a season in which they fell to 20-29 before a five-game winning streak. Texas made its first visit to Houston since Game 7 of last year's AL Championship Series.

Arizona Coyotes players have been informed the NHL club is expected to relocate to Salt Lake City, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting. Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong flew to Edmonton, Alberta, to tell players about the team's potential move to Utah before the Coyotes' game against the Oilers, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the decision hasn't been announced. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said in an email to the AP that Coyotes players were provided an update on the situation but that nothing regarding the franchise's relocation has been completed yet. Potential new owner Ryan Smith solicited names for a Salt Lake City-based team earlier this week.

Martin Wygod parlayed his financial success as an executive in the healthcare industry into becoming a prominent owner and breeder in thoroughbred racing. He has died at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California. Wygod won the 2004 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies with Sweet Catomine, who won the Eclipse Award as the nation's 2-year-old filly champion. The person spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because the team has not announced the signing. NFL Network first reported on the deal. Tomlinson instantly provides Seattle with an experience option on the interior of the offensive line, which headed into the draft later this month was viewed as a need. Tomlinson was a first-round pick of Detroit in 2015 and has started 114 consecutive games dating to the 2017 season.

He says "Tyler is improving" and that "he can be available next week." Adams had played two club matches, on March 13 and 20, after returning from a hamstring injury that had limited him to one game during the previous 12 months. Bieber will be sidelined for the rest of 2024 and it's not known when he'll pitch again. The Guardians said Dr. Keith Meister performed the operation in Texas and "was pleased with the results" of the reconstruction of Bieber's ulnar collateral ligament. Bieber is scheduled to report to the team's training facility in Goodyear, Arizona on Saturday for his post-op appointment. Bieber is 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA in 134 starts for Cleveland since 2018.

Last year's final average of .248 was up from .243 in 2022 and .244 in 2021. The average rises during the course of the season as weather warms.

Colorado right-hander Daniel Bard needs surgery to repair the flexor tendon in his right elbow and will not pitch again this season, Rockies manager Bud Black said Friday. UNLV signed second-year football coach Barry Odom to a five-year contract that pays more than $1 million each season. Odom led the Rebels to a 9-5 record last season. That was the most victories in the program since 1984. UNLV played in the Mountain West championship for the first time and competed in its first bowl in 10 years. The Rebels lost 49-36 to Kansas in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl in Phoenix. The Mountain West named Odom its Coach of the Year.

Ippei Mizuhara's initial appearance in federal court on Friday marked the first time the interpreter has been seen in public since the scandal exploded last month. With great, long strides, the 6-foot-5 De La Cruz shifted into hyperdrive on his way to second base and legged out his first inside-the-park home run at 30 feet per second. The Vegas Golden Knights say captain Mark Stone has been cleared to return to practice on a limited basis as he recovers from a lacerated spleen. The Golden Knights made the announcement on X. Stone was injured on Feb. 20. He was expected to participate in a non-contact jersey during the team's morning skate. In 56 games this season, the right winger has 16 goals and 37 assists for 53 points for the defending Stanley Cup champions. They'll bring a three-game losing streak into their game later in the day against the Minnesota Wild.

Wisconsin and Marshall will face each other in 2028 at Wisconsin's Camp Randall Stadium. The game will take place Sept. 2, 2028. It is scheduled to serve as the season opener for both teams. Wisconsin and Marshall have played against each other just once before. Wisconsin beat the Thundering Herd 51-14 at Madison in 2008. Marshall also has upcoming games with Big Ten teams at Ohio State this year and at Penn State in 2026. The Ohio State game is scheduled for Sept. 21.

He was only 20 when he took part in the Los Angeles Games in 1984, but says he's in better shape now, at 60, as he prepares to compete in Paris after the second-longest gap between Olympic appearances in history. Martinez told The Associated Press that "I give very little relevance" to his age and that " feel better than when I was 20 years old." Only Japanese dressage rider Hiroshi Hoketsu waited longer to return to the Olympics. He first competed in Tokyo in 1964 and returned to the Games in Beijing in 2008.

Kentucky has hired BYU's Mark Pope as men's basketball coach, bringing home a captain of the Wildcats' 1996 national championship team to succeed John Calipari. Anders Besseberg was convicted of accepting bribes in the form of expensive watches, hunting trips and a liaison with a prostitute in Moscow, which allegedly was linked to him acting in favor of Russia during more than 20 years as president of the International Biathlon Union. The ruling said that "the court has no doubt that he has acted in favor of Russia, both in word and deed." The 78-year-old Norwegian said he would appeal the ruling. Besseberg stepped down in 2018 after a police raid on IBU offices in Austria as part of a multi-nation investigation.

A Spanish court says the investigation into corruption inside the Spanish soccer federation under former president Luis Rubiales has been expanded to include his successor, Pedro Rocha. The investigating judge decided to officially consider Rocha under investigation after hearing testimony from him. Rocha took over as interim federation president after Rubiales stepped down in September, weeks after he kissed a player without her consent during the Women's World Cup awards ceremony. Rocha resigned from his interim post last week upon announcing that he would run in upcoming elections for the federation presidency. He says his "conscience is clear."

Next year's Formula 1 season will open in Australia for the first time since 2019. The Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne will be the opening race because the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian rounds of the F1 championship are shifting to mid-April dates to avoid the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia held the first two races of this year. The full 2025 schedule was revealed Friday and stays at 24 races with no changes to the venues for next year. The season finishes with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Dec. 7.
