SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah showed their dominance on defense and offense this week against San Jose State, BYU struggled to find offense in a loss to No. 10 Wisconsin, Utah State ground game struggled against Wake Forest and Weber State, now ranked 18th in FCS Coaches Poll, got a win over Sacramento State.

This week the KSL.com sports staff named Utah wide receiver Darren Carrington II as the local Player of the Week.

Darren Carrington II, WR, Utah

In the first three games of the season, the senior Utah wide receiver has shown he is the go-to receiver for the Utes offense. The Utes showed Saturday that he can make the most of the targets he gets from quarterback Tyler Huntley.

Carrington was the leading receiver for the Utes, with a total of 153 yards. Carrington had 94 more yards receiving than any of his teammates. He had an impressive nine receptions for the game, three of which were receptions made for a touchdown.

The star receiver has eclipsed the 100-yard receiving mark in all three games of the season. He has a total of 26 receptions on the year. The most he had at Oregon for a season was 43.

Carrington is now tied with UCLA receiver Darren Andrews for second in the most receiving yards in the country, with Virginia Tech’s Cam Phillips having 417 on the season. Carrington is also tied for fifth in receiving touchdowns in the country.

Honorable mentions:

  • Stefan Cantwell, QB, Weber State: Weber State came off a hard-fought battle California and started their Big Sky regular season against Sacramento State. The senior quarterback showed his experience leading the Wildcats to a 31-24 victory. Cantwell completed 14-of-23 of his passes for 109 yards and one touchdown.
  • Tyler Huntley, QB, Utah: The two-time KSL.com Player of the Week continued to show his talent in a win against San Jose State Saturday. Huntley threw for 341 yards on 30-of-43 passing, had 14 carries for 53 yards and had four passing touchdowns.
