STANFORD, Calif. — The BYU baseball team’s run in the NCAA Tournament came to an end Saturday afternoon.

Quinn Brodey went 3 for 5 with a home run and two runs scored, and Daniel Bakst was 3 for 5 with three RBIs to help the No. 8-ranked Cardinal avoid elimination with a 9-1 win over BYU in the Stanford regional.

“I don't feel like the score was indicative of how good that game was,” BYU coach Mike Littlewood said in a statement. “Maverik (Buffo) gave us a chance to win, but we couldn’t solve (Chris) Castellanos. He didn't give us anything to hit. His change-up is a game-changer, and he was a bulldog out there."

Colton Shaver smacked his second home run of the regional with a solo shot for the Cougars, who were held to just two hits but took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. In his first nine at-bats of the NCAA Tournament, Shaver had just two hits — both for home runs in the Stanford regional.

“He missed one pitch on me the entire day and I got a barrel on it,” Shaver said after the game.

Brennon Anderson was 2-for-4 to lead BYU, which was held to just four hits.

BYU starter Maverik Buffo pitched a no-hitter through the first three innings, but Stanford’s Castellanos was equally impressive in allowing just one hit with no walks in the pitchers' duel.

Buffo allowed four earned runs on six hits with five strikeouts in 6⅔ innings of work for the Cougars.

Brodey took the first hit of the game for Stanford with a leadoff triple to the left center-field wall. But Buffo induced three-straight outs to end the inning with no damage.

The Cardinal responded with three runs in the top of the sixth, including Jack Klein’s two-run homer to take a 3-1 edge. Klein finished 3 for 4 for Stanford.

Brodey and Bakst each tacked on a home run in the Cardinal’s three-run seventh, and Stanford scored three runs in three straight innings to advance to face Cal State Fullerton in the regional final Saturday evening. If Stanford wins, a second final will be played Sunday.
