VANCOUVER, B.C. — Real Salt Lake third-round draft pick Amass Amankona picked a good time to score his first professional goal.

The Dayton product scored the lone goal of the match in the fifth minute of stoppage time — on virtually the final kick of the game — to help Real Monarchs hand Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 its first loss in league play with a 1-0 win Saturday night.

Lalo Fernandez earned the shutout in goal for the Monarchs (4-4-4, 16 points), who also took a 2-2 tie in the Salt Lake side’s first trip to Vancouver a week ago. The RSL third-string goalkeeper made was under siege by Vancouver (6-1-4, 22 points) in the first half, including stopping Ben McKendry with a world-class save.

Eti Tavares registered the assist on Amankona’s goal, striking the last-ditch free kick into the area for the Dayton alum to finish for the win.
