OGDEN — Tyler Brimhall scored 23 points and was 5-of-7 from the 3-point line as Logan upset No. 1 and defending state champion Orem 65-60 in the first round of the 4A state tournament.

Logan made 8-of-12 3-point attempts in the first half and built a 38-33 lead at the half. They led by as much as nine but Orem would rally in the 4th quarter to take the lead but each time Logan would respond. Brimhall broke a 51-51 tie late in the 4th quarter with a layup. He then put the game out of reach with his 5th 3-pointer of the game giving Logan a 56-51 lead with 1:11 remaining in the game.

Logan finished in a tie for 4th in Region 5 and had to defeat Box Elder last Thursday in a Region play-in game just to qualify for a state tournament play-in game against Provo the next day. Now they have pulled off one of the most shocking upsets in the history of the state tournament.

Orem returned several key players from last year's 4A state champion team but allowed Logan to shoot 56 percent from the field and 59 percent from the 3-point line. Orem struggled from the 3-point line making just 5 of 20 attempts.

Dalton Nixon led the Tigers with 17 points and 8 rebounds. Zach Hunsaker scored 16 points in his final high school game.

Logan will play East in Thursday's quarterfinals. That game tips off at 4:10 p.m.
