PROVO, Utah (AP) -- Former Brigham Young track and field coach Clarence Robison has died. He was 83.

Robison, who coached the Cougars from 1949 through 1988, died Monday in his sleep, BYU said in a release Tuesday.

"We have lost one of the greats," athletic director Tom Holmoe said.

BYU won 18 conference championships under Robison, who was an Olympian in 1948, and tied for the national championship in 1970. His son, Mark, is coach of the BYU men's track and field team.

Robison is survived by his wife, Monita, nine children, 41 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. His funeral is scheduled for Monday in Provo. ------ On the Net: www.byucougars.com
