PROVO — With no time on the clock, TJ Haws called bank. Or at least, he called win.

The senior guard from Alpine lobbed in a long jumper with no time on the clock, and BYU eked out a 72-71 win over Houston on Friday night in the recently refurbished, 7,100-seat Fertitta Center in Houston.

With 5.1 seconds left, Haws received an inbounds pass in the backcourt, then darted to the top of the key. After a hard-right turn, the Lone Peak product hit a fadeaway jumper over the outstretched arm of Kansas transfer Quentin Grimes.

The ball hit the front of the rim as time expired, then dropped casually through the basket to give the Cougars (3-1) their second-straight victory of the season.

Haws finished with 10 points and five assists on 4-of-13 shooting for the Cougars (3-1), who were led by Alex Barcello’s 16-point effort in the win. Kolby Lee had a career-high 14 points and seven rebounds, and Jake Toolson added 14 points and five boards on an efficient 5-of-8 shooting night that included 4-of-4 from 3-point range.

Caleb Mills came off the bench for 17 points to lead Houston (1-1), and Fabian White Jr. supplied 14 points and five rebounds for the red Cougars, who got 10 points apiece from Grimes and DeJon Jarreau.

Mills made two free throws with 1:25 to play to put Houston on top. BYU’s next two possessions ended in turnovers, but Houston missed a 3-pointer between the turnovers and had a turnover with 5.1 seconds to go to set up Haws' game-winner.

The Cougars play Wednesday, Nov. 20, at Boise State. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. MST from ExtraMile Arena.
