UNDATED (AP) — College football always needs an argument when it comes to the postseason. This year, it was whether LSU or Ohio State should be the top seed in the four-team playoff. Four was enough this season to accommodate the teams worthy of a crack at the national championship. Maybe more than enough. Expansion still seems inevitable, even though it has become apparent over the first six seasons of the playoff that it is just not needed to crown a deserving champion.

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — No. 7 Oregon will face No. 11 Wisconsin in the 106th edition of the Rose Bowl. The Ducks are in the Granddaddy of Them All for the fourth time in 11 seasons. The Badgers are making the trip to Pasadena for the fourth time in 10 seasons. Oregon won the Pac-12 title by beating Utah in the championship game. Wisconsin edged out Penn State for the Rose Bowl trip thanks to its solid performance in its Big Ten title game loss to playoff-bound Ohio State.

UNDATED (AP) — Chris Petersen’s last opponent at Washington will be the team that gave him his first head coaching job: Boise State. Las Vegas Bowl organizers capitalized on circumstances allowing them to invite the Huskies to square off against Boise State on Dec. 21. Boise State was invited because it is the Mountain West champion. Washington was the best Pac-12 team still available. Petersen said he would prefer to play somebody else in his last game. He and seven members of his staff have ties to Boise State.

SEATTLE (AP) — Killian Tillie made a key 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 2:55 remaining and finished with 15 points, Joel Ayayi hit another important 3 with 24 seconds left and No. 9 Gonzaga held off No. 22 Washington 83-76. Control of the in-state rivalry remained on the east side of the state as the Bulldogs could never pull away but made the key plays in the closing minutes to hold off the young Huskies. Gonzaga has won six straight in the series, with Washington’s last win coming in 2005. Isaiah Stewart led Washington with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Kiara Pickett drilled home a penalty kick after freshman goalkeeper Katie Meyer saved the previous shot to lift Stanford past North Carolina 5-4 on penalty kicks after a scoreless draw in the NCAA championship game. The Cardinal won their third overall title and first since 2017. North Carolina lost for the fifth time in 26 national appearances.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Cody Riley had career-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds, and UCLA routed Denver 81-62 in the Bruins' first game in a week. Freshman Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 16 points for the Bruins who were playing the Pioneers for the first time sine 1976. UCLA leads the all-time series 11-1, having won the last five in a row. Ade Murkey led Denver with 18 points. The Pioneers never got a run together in the second half when they trailed by 21 points. Prince Ali added 11 points for the Bruins.

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — Ruthy Hebard had 22 points on 11-of-15 shooting, and No. 3 Oregon rediscovered its touch from the field in a 95-56 rout of South Dakota State. The Ducks shot 64%, including 58% on 3-pointers, to overwhelm the Jackrabbits. Sabrina Ionescu was within range of the 20th triple-double of her career before being pulled midway through the fourth quarter. She finished with 12 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds. The Ducks had been held under 50% shooting in their previous two games, both at the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
