WASHINGTON (AP) — Afghanistan's government is applauding President Donald Trump's speech for focusing on needs and conditions instead of timelines. Afghan Ambassador to the U.S. Hamdullah Mohib calls it a "10 out of 10." He tells The Associated Press by telephone from Kabul that Afghans heard "exactly what we needed to."

UNDATED (AP) — Authorities say two women watching the eclipse while standing on a sidewalk in Kentucky were struck by a car, and one has died. State police say the car crossed the center line and hit a utility pole and the pedestrians Monday in Hyden. The injured woman and the motorist were both taken to hospitals, but their conditions were not immediately available.

TACTICAL BASE GAMBERI, Afghanistan (AP) — U.S. military commanders close to the front lines against Taliban and Islamic State fighters in Afghanistan say they need more forces to better train Afghan soldiers. President Donald Trump declared Monday he'd augment troop levels, but wouldn't say by how much. Some of the Americans helping Afghan army units believe expanding the training can make the Afghans more capable of taking on the enemy alone.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea's military unleashed its standard fiery threats to greet annual U.S.-South Korean military drills that the North claims are an invasion rehearsal. The North Korean rhetoric came as top U.S. generals visited South Korea. They are to see the site of a contentious U.S. missile-defense system later Tuesday. The North's military says it will launch an unspecified "merciless retaliation and unsparing punishment" on the United States over the drills.

SINGAPORE (AP) — The U.S. Navy says divers are assessing the damage to the hull of the USS John S. McCain after a collision ripped a gaping hole in the ship's side near the waterline. Aircraft from the USS America and ships and aircraft from the Malaysian and Singaporean navies were continuing to search for the 10 sailors missing since the destroyer and an oil tanker collided east of Singapore.
