ELKO, Nev. (AP) — Elko city officials voted to move forward with an airport runway rehabilitation project despite local pilots asking for a taxiway to be turned into a new runway instead.
The Elko Daily Free Press reports (http://bit.ly/1LMLz99 ) that Elko Regional Airport Director Mark Gibbs says the taxiway conversion would take six to eight months and cost about $695,000, making it financially unattainable.
The conversion could potentially benefit 124 additional non-commercial flights, but would cost more than $6,000 per flight.
Officials instead voted unanimously to accept a Federal Aviation Administration grant for phase three of a runway rehabilitation project.
Runway 5-23, which SkyWest Airlines uses, will be closed from Aug. 17 to Sept. 28 for rehabilitation. No commercial flights will take place during that time, and non-commercial flights will be rerouted to another runway.
