SALT LAKE CITY — Fans of Google Glass who don't have perfect vision may be able to utilize the technology by the end of the year, according to Google.

The company said in a post Tuesday on its Project Glass Google+ page that one of the most-heard questions about its augmented-reality headset is whether it will accomodate prescription lenses.

"The Glass design is modular, so you will be able to add frames and lenses that match your prescription," the post said. "We understand how important this is and we've been working hard on it."

Google is apparently making headway with its approach to prescription Glass, as a device was spotted in the wild in New York recently. A tipster sent a photo to NBC News of a tangerine-colored headset being worn by a man at a restaurant.

That prescription Google Glass is something important for the company to get right before launch should come as no surprise. In the U.S. alone, more than 150 million people rely on corrective eyewear. Of those, only 36 million wear contact lenses. Without some kind of prescription option, Google would be shooting itself in the foot.

The frames will not be ready in time for the Explorer release, according to Google. Glass will be made available to a limited number of early adopters for testing reasons, and will cost $1,500.
