IDAHO-EXECUTION RECORDS

Idaho execution records appeal may be considered next year

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The Idaho Supreme Court is expected to decide next year whether prison officials must reveal the past source of their execution drugs. Similar debates are raging in courthouses and statehouses across the United States, but it's not yet clear if rulings elsewhere — including a recent 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision that said there is no First Amendment right to the information — will impact the Idaho fight.

Idaho Department of Correction spokesman Jeff Ray said in a prepared statement that prison officials haven't yet discussed the 9th U.S. Circuit ruling with the department's attorneys, and so they haven't yet formed an opinion on whether the ruling will help their appeal.

ACLU attorney Molly Kafka says she doesn't think the federal appellate court ruling will negatively impact for her client's case. She says University of Idaho professor Aliza Cover is suing the state under Idaho's Public Records law, and says prison officials didn't follow the state law when they withheld the lethal injection documents.

WASHINGTON SCHOOL SHOOTING

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — The murder trial for a youth charged with killing one classmate and wounding three others at a high school in Washington state has been pushed back to Oct. 5, 2020.

Spokane County Superior Court Judge Michael Price on Friday agreed to delay the trial to allow new defense attorneys for 17-year-old Caleb Sharpe to get up to speed. Trial had been scheduled for next month before Sharpe's private attorney bowed out when the family could no longer afford his services.

The Spokesman-Review reports that the Spokane County Public Defenders' Office has budgeted $250,000 to handle his defense.

Sharpe is charged with murder and attempted murder in the September 2017 shootings at Freeman High, and will be tried as an adult even though he was just 15 when the shootings occurred.

AMTRAK-CRASH

1 killed after Amtrak train hits truck parked on tracks

ATHOL, Idaho (AP) — One person has been killed after an Amtrak train heading to Seattle crashed into a truck parked on the tracks in the town of Athol, Idaho.

Officials for Amtrak say none of the 234 passengers or crew members on the train were injured in the crash early Friday morning.

But an official for the Idaho State Police says the driver of the truck was killed. No one else was in the vehicle.

KREM-TV reported the train was traveling near 80 miles per hour when it crashed into the truck parked on Highway 54 in Athol.

Amtrak says the train, which originated in Chicago, was delayed about two hours by the crash, which occurred around 1 a.m.

SCHOOL CYBERATTACK RECOVERY

Idaho students get clean computers month after cyberattack

(Information from: Idaho Press, http://www.idahopress.com)

NAMPA, Idaho (AP) — An Idaho school district has distributed computers to students a month after a department-wide cyberattack wiped out the district's network.

The Idaho Press reported Thursday that Nampa School District officials finished giving out re-imaged laptops to middle school students after high school students were equipped with unaffected devices last week.

School officials say the malware attack on Aug. 21 came just two days after the school year began, disabling the district's entire computer network.

Officials say they have not been able to determine the source of the attack.

Some parents say they are frustrated because there has not been as much communication on back-end issues since the attack occurred, including how to check student lunch balances and online grades.

PLANE CRASH-NEVADA

Plane crash wreckage found; 'no known survivors'

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a small plane believed to have two people aboard crashed in northwestern Nevada and that there were "no known survivors."

Officials said searchers found wreckage Thursday in mountains south of Pyramid Lake after the plane crashed earlier Thursday after leaving Reno for Nampa, Idaho.

The Washoe County Sheriff's Office said there weren't any known survivors but didn't immediately release any information about who was aboard the missing plane.

The Federal Aviation Administration said Friday that two people were believed to be aboard.

The Sheriff's Office said volunteers found pieces of wreckage along a ridge line near Virginia Peak.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board said they'll investigate the crash.

This story has been correct to show that the crash location is in northwestern Nevada.

FATAL CRASH-EASTERN OREGON

2 die in motorhome, pickup collision in eastern Oregon

(Information from: KATU-TV, http://www.katu.com/)

HARPER, Ore. (AP) — Authorities say two drivers were killed when a motorhome towing another vehicle and a pickup truck towing a travel trailer collided in eastern Oregon.

KATU-TV reports 78-year-old Richard Kozol of Medford was driving a Gulfstream motorhome when for an unknown reason it crossed into the westbound lanes on Highway 20 near Harper.

Oregon State Police say Kozol collided with a Ford F-250 pickup towing a travel trailer operated by 72-year-old John Haynes of Palo Cedro, California. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two passengers, one from each vehicle, were taken to a hospital in Boise, Idaho.
