KANAB, Kane County — Three people were transported to hospitals via medical helicopters after a crash involving a tour bus on Thursday morning.

The crash took place about 10:22 a.m. on U.S. Highway 89 near milepost 35, about 30 miles east of Kanab, according to a news release from the Utah Highway Patrol.

The tour bus was fully loaded and was following a 2019 Yukon XL SUV heading east, UHP said. The driver of the Yukon signaled to turn right onto a gravel county road, according to UHP. The bus driver saw that there was no oncoming traffic, signaled and moved into the westbound lane to pass the Yukon.

As the bus came alongside the Yukon, the driver decided to turn left instead of right. The car swerved left, directly into the path of the bus, which t-boned the car on the driver’s side, according to UHP.

The bus also pushed the Yukon off the left side of the road, and the car rolled several times, UHP said.

The male driver of the Yukon and a male passenger, who was seated behind the driver, were taken to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George via a medical helicopter.

A woman who was a passenger in the car also was severely injured, UHP said. She was transported by ambulance to Kane County Hospital in Kanab before being airlifted to Dixie Regional Medical Center, according to UHP.

Officials did not provide other details about the injuries or medical conditions of the people in the Yukon.

The bus driver was treated by medical personnel at the scene, but was not taken to a hospital. None of the passengers on the bus had serious injuries, UHP said. They were taken to Kanab on a county bus.
