WASHINGTON (AP) - A Republican congressman has retracted a statement claiming that Congress' budget agreement gives money to African warlord Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army.
Congressman Mick Mulvaney of South Carolina had said he opposed the deal because, among other things, the militant LRA group "received special funds."
The agreement to reopen the government and raise the debt limit allows the Defense Department to continue assisting African forces pursuing the fugitive warlord and his fighters.
Kony is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and has evaded capture for years through multiple African countries.
Mulvaney's latest statement removes the reference to the LRA. It offers no explanation for the change.
