TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A judge in Ohio says she needs more information before deciding whether to release a man who confessed to a string of rapes and murders under a decades-old plea deal.
The judge in Toledo said Thursday she wants Nathaniel Cook to undergo another evaluation that looks at whether he's likely to commit any more crimes.
Another hearing is set for May 31.
Cooks attorneys say a plea deal signed nearly 20 years ago says the court is bound to order his release this year.
The agreement forced Cook to confess to killing three people with his brother, who also admitted to killing five others in the 1980s.
Families of the victims say the confessions gave them needed answers, but they want the judge to keep the 59-year-old Cook in prison.
