DEERFIELD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey community is grieving for a 10-year-old girl who died after plunging from a ride at a festival over the weekend.
Hailey McMullen, of Deerfield Township, was ejected from the Wisdom Super Sizzler "Extreme" ride Saturday night at a harvest festival. State police released her name Monday.
She was flown to a hospital but pronounced dead a short time later. The cause and circumstances of her death are being investigated.
Her classmates recalled her as smart, funny, happy and a fan of jujitsu. Flags were flown at half-staff at her school.
A makeshift memorial is growing outside a local store, where community members left flowers and tied balloons to a pole.
