Read. Graduate. Succeed. is an AmeriCorps program that organizes volunteers to help students who are starting to fall behind in reading. Volunteer tutors support regular classroom instruction with a structured practice called the Student Tutoring Achievement for Reading or STAR program. STAR was developed by the Utah State Office of Education based on researched principles. Students quickly become stellar readers with individual attention and structured practice. Oquirrh Hills Elementary School participates in the program and has seen an incredible impact on their students’ progress. STAR tutors help those students both hone their skills and increase their confidence, which helps them become successful in areas beyond just reading. They benefit from increased reading time, targeted practice, and a rewarding reading experience that promotes success and strengthens the literacy framework of local districts. If you would like to join as a reading tutor, visit UtahGivesBack.org to find out how. Volunteers receive training and the ongoing support they need to help them be successful. SelectHealth recognizes the important community role provided by the STAR program as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
