REXBURG, Idaho (AP) — An eastern Idaho woman is being called a hero after she spotted a stroller fall into a fast-moving irrigation canal and jumped in to save the little boy strapped inside.
The Rexburg Standard Journal reports Missy Pocock was mowing her lawn when she saw the stroller fall into the nearby canal two weeks ago after a dog bumped it. She leapt over her fence, jumped into the canal and swam to the stroller, pulling the 2-year-old out. Pocock says the boy was turning blue but started breathing again after she pounded on his back to get the water out of his lungs. Pocock says the child's grateful mother later thanked her for saving the boy's life.
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare says Idaho has the nation's second-highest unintentional drowning rate for children between the ages of 1 and 5, and more children die in canals than in any other body of water.
